Spring 2010 Pre-Registration Advising

The Spring 2010 class search is now online for the next semester. On November 2nd you will receive an e-mail from the Registrar’s Office letting you know the earliest registration time available to you.

If you have an advising hold, you must attend a group advising meeting OR meet with your advisor to remove this hold before you can register. See below to see which of these options applies to you:

  1. First Year Students: Must attend group meeting — no exceptions.

  2. Second Year Students: You have an option; choose ONE of the following:

    1. Submit the “Pre-Registration Advising” web form, found at: http://studentservices.engr.wisc.edu/advising/pre-registration.html.

Do this only if you are SURE you have no questions, and are SURE you are on the right track.

Do this at least a week before your expected registration time, in case there are complications.

    2. Attend a group advising meeting.

    3. Meet with an advisor. Schedule an appointment right away, because the advisors’ schedules fill up quickly.

Make your appointment by contacting the EGR Office at 262-2473 or stop by 1150 EH; office hours are 8:00 am-4:30 pm, M-F.

If your intentions have changed, please make sure that you see another advisor on campus for appropriate advising.

For a referral to another advisor or advising office, feel free to email your EGR advisor for contact information.

  3. Fifth Semester Student or later: Must meet with an advisor.

The advising meeting schedule is included at the bottom of this page. Note that the meetings are organized by interest, with special meetings for undecided students and one for students who have decided not to pursue engineering.

Each meeting will last about 60 minutes. After the advising meeting, your advising hold will be removed so that you may register at your assigned time.

Each session will have the same format:

  1. you will receive updated copies of the departmental curriculum guide;

  2. an EGR advisor will discuss course options and highlight curriculum details that might affect your course choices; and

  3. a representative of the department will explain opportunities that await you (except for undecided meetings).

You will also learn about DARS (the Degree Auditing Reporting System) and the advisors will answer as many of your questions as time allows.

No longer interested in engineering? At the November 9th meeting, a Cross-College advisor and an EGR advisor will help you identify courses, campus resources, and other advising opportunities to help you steer your academics toward a degree outside engineering.

After attending a group meeting, you are welcome to make an appointment with your EGR advisor by contacting the EGR Office, 1150 EH (262-2473, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., M-F). That way the two of you can focus on your particular issues instead of repeating material covered at the group sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I attend a student organization’s advising meeting, do I still have to get more advising and get my advising hold removed?

Yes, you must follow the instructions on the top of this page. Nevertheless, we encourage you also to attend advising meetings sponsored by engineering student organizations. Peer advice is helpful!

If I’m considering other majors or programs, may I see other advisors?

Although you may seek advising outside of engineering, you must still get your advising hold removed by an EGR advisor. Therefore, if you are interested in engineering, you must attend an “Engineering” group advising meeting. If you definitely plan to transfer out of engineering, you must attend the “Undecided, not engineering” meeting.

Other questions? Or questions unrelated to registration?

As always, your EGR advisor will be glad to talk with you. Call 262-2473 or stop by 1150 Engineering Hall. Office hours are 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, M-F. If you have a quick question, you may email egradvisor@engr.wisc.edu.
