Rules for acquiring an additional major (or a double major) vary
by schools and colleges at UW-Madison. The College of
Engineering rules are below.
- Additional major in the College of Engineering
Undergraduate
engineering students may not major in two engineering
disciplines at the same time. Undergraduate students in other
UW-Madison schools and colleges may not earn an additional
major in the College of Engineering.
- Additional major in the College of Letters and Science
Undergraduate engineering students may earn an additional
major in the College of Letters and Science and have the
additional major noted on their transcript at the time of
graduation. To qualify, the student must have approval in
advance from both the department in the College of Letters
and Science offering the major and the academic dean of the
College of Engineering, and must satisfy all requirements for
the Letters and Science major by the time the engineering
degree is completed. Requirements for the engineering degree
and the second major must be satisfied at the same time.
Engineering students frequently earn additional majors in math,
physics, or computer science--subjects that overlap
efficiently with engineering curricula. By working closely with
academic advisers, students can incorporate majors in other
interest areas but should be prepared to extend their time to
graduation to accommodate the extra credits.
- Dual bachelor's degrees in business and engineering
Engineering students interested in a business degree generally
complete their bachelor's degree in engineering and earn a
master of business administration degree (M.B.A.).
A student who desires a bachelor of business administration
(B.B.A.) degree from the School of Business and bachelor of
science degree from the College of Engineering should plan
the combination program early in the college career.
For either the B.B.A. or M.B.A., students in the College of
Engineering should select appropriate electives. Econ 101 and
102 and ACCT I S 100--prerequisites to many advanced
business courses--should be taken as early as possible to
allow the completion of other requirements for the business
and engineering degrees. Engineering students should consult
with their adviser early in the program.
Although each student continues with an engineering adviser
until the completion of his or her engineering degree, students
should consult with an admissions counselor in 2265 Grainger
Hall.
