Faculty and Staff
Faculty and staff play a very important role in the lives of students at UW-Madison. The DAO offers faculty a number of resources to assist students who may come to them for help. Listed below are just some of the resources available to assist in advising students who are in need of guidance and support.
Guidance and Support
Campus activities such as Harambee Day, a program for prospective students of color who have been admitted to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the College of Engineering. This overnight program provides students with the opportunity to visit the UW-Madison campus; attend classes with current undergraduates majoring in engineering; meet faculty, staff, and current students; and hear about the support services and programs offered through the Diversity Affairs Office within the College of Engineering.
Harambee Day — Fall 2008
Preview Day — Friday, November 16, 2007. For students in grades 11–12. High school guidance counselors and teachers are invited to attend. This program is designed for students who are considering a major in engineering. Students will tour the engineering campus, meet current undergraduates, and learn how best to prepare as high school students for a major in engineering.
Faculty and staff serve as mentors for the Sloan Engineering Mentoring Program, whose goal is to enhance academic success for first-year undergraduate students. The program facilitates opportunities that will increase students’ access to and inclusion in academic and professional resources.
The LEED Scholars program provides academic, professional support and a regular social network for women and students of color in the college. Eighty students, on average, attend the monthly meetings. One hundred students receive annual scholarships ranging from 1K to 3K per academic year. LEED meetings serve as outreach to all underrepresented students and women in the college.
In cooperation with WiscAMP, Wisconsin Alliance for Minority Participation, and the Engineering General Resources (EGR) office, the DAO organizees tutorial support for students in the form of a) tutor-facilitated study groups, b) drop-in tutoring, c) supplemental instruction, and d) an on-line course. The support for all engineering gateway courses serves DAO students and all students in the college. It is advertised also to STEM students across campus.
