Take a look at what SEMP participants experienced during the 2007–2008 academic year — all quotes were provided by last year’s mentees and peer mentors:
Mentees worked individually and with their small group mentoring teams to develop time-bound goals and strategies for success. Mentees received “helpful advice” from advanced students and their faculty/staff mentor “about life in engineering and planning for the future.” Mentees and mentors shared personal experiences with the small group mentoring team about “what can be done to overcome adversity, and [how] to move on to that next level.”
We held large-group SEMP kickoff parties at the start of both the fall and spring semesters. Kickoff special guests included Tutoring by Request/ Supplemental Instruction, Greater University Tutoring Services (GUTS), Engineering Career Services, and a diverse list of COE student organizations. Mentees and peer mentors also attended a spring semester career development luncheon. One student had this to say, “All aspects of the workshop were valuable. It really helped to see what I need to do to help me throughout my college career & work career.” Another student recommended that we “make the [career workshop] mandatory.”
“Being a peer mentor gave me a chance to get to know new LEED (Leaders in Engineering Excellence and Diversity) students and to get to know more of the engineering faculty. Mentoring the new students reminded me of how far I have come and being mentored by a faculty member reminds me of how far I can go.”
“Already I've met great people who have led me to new ideas about my work.”
