Course Equivalents

Courses Abroad

All UW-Madison College of Engineering study abroad participants earn UW-Madison pass/fail residence credits for work completed abroad. This means the credits earned while on a study abroad program will appear on the student transcript with a UW-Madison department number, course title, and pass or fail grade. UW requires that students earn the last 30 credits of their degree while in residence in Madison. Credits earned on our programs are counted towards this requirement the same as if the students were physically in Madison during the time they are abroad. For this reason, in most cases, studying abroad does not delay graduation (depending on specific degree requirements in the major). Consult UW's Undergraduate Catalog for more information how residence credits relate to degree requirements.

Course Equivalency Process

Before participants in a UW College of Engineering study abroad program depart for their program overseas, they are encouraged to review established course equivalencies for their specific program site. If students enroll in and complete courses in the course equivalency tables while abroad, they will receive the UW course credit with pass/fail marks on their official UW record.

How do I equate a new course?

Engineering Courses

If classes are being offered at the host institution that have not yet been equated (meaning they are not listed on the table below), and the student would like to take one or more of those classes abroad, the student needs to follow three steps:

  1. Obtain the course syllabus for the class you want to take abroad.

Obtaining a syllabus is relatively easy and can usually be accomplished by visiting the host university website, writing the course instructor, or contacting a departmental administrative person at the host university.

  2. Ask a UW instructor to approve the course for UW credit.

Print out the Request for Course Equivalency Form. Attach it to the syllabus, and have an instructor here in UW, whether in Engineering or in another UW College, read through the materials and decide on a specific UW course equation. Once they have decided, they can fill out and sign the form accordingly.

Please note that you should try to find an instructor or advisor who has knowledge of the course’s subject matter, or even a faculty member who teaches a parallel course here at UW. If you need help finding the appropriate faculty member to go to, please let us know.

  3. Turn the completed Request for Course Equivalency form and syllabus into our office at M1002A in the Engineering Centers Building and we’ll take care of the rest.

Please also note that there are several study abroad offices on campus that send UW students to the same institutions UW Engineering students attend. We recognize courses equated through these offices as well. You can check the equivalency lists below to see if any courses from your study abroad institution have been equated through these other offices:
