Selecting a Course

  1. Go to the Timetable and check the courses offered in the college of engineering for the semester you will be here. Make a large selection of all the courses you're interested in.

  2. Next, visit the eCOW Course Homepages to see the content of each course you have pre-selected and narrow down your selection.

  3. Make sure to ask these questions before you select a course:

    • Is the course offered during the semester that I'm in Madison?
    • Is it open to graduate students only or to undergraduate students only?
    • Do I have the required prerequisites/background to take that course?
    • Do I have the required computer skills?
    • Does it match my degree requirements (if any)?
    • Will this class benefit me professionally, educationally, and personally?

  4. Note also that:

    • You cannot take more than 18 credits if your status is undergraduate student. This limit is 12 if your status is graduate student. A course will usually count as 3 credits. Although not recommended for exchange students, if you want to take more credits than is allotted to you, talk with your advisor.

    • If you find that the course(s) you want to take are full to capacity or "closed," ask the instructor's permission to enroll you or place you on a "waiting list." Many international students have been successful in gaining access to the courses of their first choice by pursuing these options.
