College of Engineering Study Abroad Programs

Tohoku University

Brief Description

Full year programs. Programs focus on learning Japanese language and culture as well as taking technical classes and humanities classes taught in English. Research projects are offered for full-year students.

Language requirement

No language requirement. Students must have an interest in learning the Japanese language. Students who have good Japanese language skills may take engineering classes taught in Japanese. Kyoto does not offer engineering classes in English.

GPA requirement

3.0 cumulative (this can vary somewhat by institution)

Housing

All schools offer on-campus housing (dormitories).

Application deadlines

  • Spring: October 1
  • Fall/Academic Year: March 1

Budget

Tuition and fees: University of Wisconsin-Madison tuition
UW program fee: $300
UW-mandated health insurance: $37/month
Housing: $200-$300 per month
Miscellaneous expenses (laundry, books, supplies, etc.): $1,800
Roundtrip travel: $1,800
Local transportation: $60/month
Student visa: free of charge

Entertainment, vacation and travel costs vary widely. Host institutions may also require students to purchase their policies in addition to CISI.

Application

Tohoku University Tokyo:

1) Complete Global E3's electronic application form online.

2) Complete Tohoku's additional application form, available online.

3) Complete the IESP Application Cover Sheet (PDF or Word).

4) Turn in recommendation letters, transcripts and all other required documents and the cover sheet to IESP.

Tokyo Institute of Technology, Kyoto University, Kyushu University (Fukuoka): See the International Engineering Studies and Programs office for application materials.

The IESP Application Cover Sheet (PDF or Word) should also be completed and turned in with documents.
