Plane Tickets You should start shopping for your plane tickets right away. The sooner you start, and the more research you do, the more money you will save on your purchase. Student ID, Campus Errands You'll also have to remember to take care of some last minute tasks before you leave campus. One week before you leave, change your campus address through your MyUW account. This will ensure that mail and other important correspondence will not go to the wrong address while you're away. You may find it useful to purchase CIEE's International Student ID Card at STA Travel. The card can get you discounts on purchases, museum admission fees, etc. You will need a valid student ID, proof of student status, and passport or driver's license. The cost is $22. The ID will expire after a year. Last but not least, remember to pay any required fees, discuss when you will interview, and enter info in the database (if necessary) at Engineering Career Services. This will help you tie up any loose ends on campus before you leave for your semester abroad. Packing List What you bring abroad depends largely upon where you study and who you are. Download a general packing list. Cultural Adjustment Read "Culture Shock" information, including How to Cope with Culture Shock, Reverse Culture Shock, and Intercultural Adjustment Cycle. Tourism Offices Worldwide Information from the U.S. State Department The State Department lists tips for students. Read the consular information sheet for the country you are visiting. View any current travel warnings and public announcements. The State Department also recommends that you register with the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country where you will be living. Additional information is available from the U.S. State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs. |
