LeaderShape Defines Leadership

Leadership involves living in a state of possibility, making a commitment to a vision, developing relationships to move the vision into action, and sustaining a high level of integrity. Effective leadership takes place in the context of a supportive community and results in positive change.

History

A leadership development program was created by the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity in 1986 as a means of improving campus leadership. This program evolved into a separate non-profit corporation, LeaderShape, Inc., which has provided the LeaderShape experience to over 2,500 young men and women. During the summer of 1996 then students, representing the UW-Madison College of Engineering, attended the LeaderShape Institute at Allerton Conference Center in Champaign, Illinois.

Recently, in an effort to provide this flagship program to even more young adults, LeaderShape, Inc. has formed partnerships with universities across the country in order for a campus to conduct its own session of LeaderShape specifically for its students. The first Wisconsin LeaderShape Institue was held in August 1997. A total of forty-two students from the College of Engineering and the School of Business attended, along with two faculty members and two company representatives as facilitators. The first Wisconsin LeaderShape Institute was funded with grants acquired from the deans of both schools.

Wisconsin LeaderShape's vision is to continue to develop future leaders of college and industry through LeaderShape Institutes on campus and to improve society by inspiring, developing, and supporting more people committed to "leading with integrity."
