Freshman Academic Achievement Award

We are pleased to offer scholarships to a select group of incoming engineering students. The awards are primarily based on merit, although financial needs play a part in a small percentage. An application is essential to the process, and the March 1 deadline is strictly enforced. To receive an application, Wisconsin residents can ask their high school math and science teacher for a copy. Interested students outside of Wisconsin can also write for an application (address requests to Freshman Academic Achievement Awards, 1150 Engineering Hall, 1415 Engineering Drive, Madison, WI 53706), or download it online (see below).

The scholarships will be awarded in April. Amounts range from roughly $500 to $3000. The scholarship is non-renewable, but most students will be able to apply for departmental support as they enter their second year.

Note: Our philosophical viewpoint is that scholarships are an excellent way to encourage and reward good students. We are pleased to be able to do that, given the generosity of alumni. However, our purpose in offering scholarships is not to "bribe" or coerce students to attend, since we know that most well-informed students would find UW-Madison to be attractive whether or not we offered freshman scholarships.

Download the application now! After downloading, open and print the file with Adobe Acrobat Reader; the reader is available for Macintosh, Windows, and UNIX, and is free.

Important note: Please make certain that the application is submitted in its entirety. The teacher recommendation is required; you should fill out the first three pages, and then give the entire application to your teacher to complete and mail!

Adobe Acrobat PDF files are used on this site for large documents and as an alternative format to HTML webpages. Most browsers are able to open PDF files, but if you need to install a plug-in for your browser, visit Adobe Acrobat Reader — http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/alternate.html.
