Should I get involved in extra-curricular activities? Engineering students are encouraged to participate in any extra-curricular activities which suit their interests, but most soon realize that they have to make some sacrifices in their academic pursuits to satisfy their personal interests, such as taking fewer credits and thus postponing graduation. In some years, approximately one-quarter of the UW Marching Band are engineering students. Other popular activities include the Society of Women Engineers, Engineering EXPO (the student-run engineering open house attended by as many as 17,000 visitors) and the award winning Wisconsin Engineer Magazine. Most students find extra-curricular activities to be a welcome break from the academic rigors of an engineering education. Many studies show that such activities significantly enhance a student's chances of succeeding at a university. Because many students find physical fitness to be an effective method of maintaining mental fitness, they get involved in sports clubs or take Physical Education classes to force themselves into a regular fitness routine. Becoming active in student organizations is a great way to develop skills in cooperation and leadership. Employers are impressed with students who have proven themselves to be well-rounded individuals. Engineering students are strongly encouraged to join professional societies and social organizations, and to accept invitations to join honor societies. RELATED LINKS |
