How long does it take to earn a degree in engineering?
Most engineering students take 4 to 5 years to graduate. However, many
of the students who take more than 4 years to graduate have made a
conscious decision to become involved in a number of worthwhile
activities that delay graduation. The most notable of such activities
is participation in our Co-op program, which can be an invaluable part
of an engineering education but can delay graduation a semester or
two.
| Semesters | Semesters to Attain Degree |
|---|
| 6 | 4% |
| 7-8 | 17% |
| 9-10 | 60% |
| 11-20 | 19% |
| 21+ | 0% |
Clearly, most UW-Madison students do not finish in the traditional
four years (8 semesters). Yet, all engineering curricula show an
8-semester program. To understand this paradox, keep these facts in
mind:
- UW-Madison engineering students must complete more credits, and take more difficult courses, than the average student.
- Course availability is not typically a factor in determining a student's time to graduation.
- Employers tell us that a student's time to graduation is not a significant factor in hiring decisions. What a student accomplished outside of class definitely is.
All of these factors notwithstanding, EGR advisors will help any student meet the goal of graduation in exactly four years if that is a high priority.
