How many credits should I take?
Engineering students normally carry 14 to 16 credits. Although the
amount of class-time and required studying varies from course to
course, most classes meet one hour per credit per week and require 2
hours of studying per credit per week. For example, a 5-credit course
normally meets 5 hours per week and requires approximately 10 hours of
studying per week. The specific courses students take depend on
placement test scores or previous courses taken. Students choose the
number of courses and credits they take, but academic advisors are
available to help students choose a reasonable course
load. Pre-engineers must consult with an advisor before they are
allowed to register; most engineering departments have a similar
requirement.
