New student

Each fall, UW-Madison admits between 700 and 850 new students to the College of Engineering. All have the same general classification of EGR, that is, they are in the College of Engineering but are not yet affiliated with a particular department.

During your first one or two years as a student, decide which department to enter. To make this decision:

It might help to explore majors outside of engineering, by talking with someone at Cross-College Advising Service in Room 10, Ingraham Hall.

Many freshmen enter engineering undecided as a major. Usually, engineering students must obtain advising each semester before registering for classes. Advising and career counseling can help.

Incoming new freshmen follow a two-step process for admission to UW-Madison and admission to degree-granting departm ents in the College of Engineering:

  1. Apply to the University of Wisconsin-Madison via the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and, on the application form, designate "Engineering" as the school/college of interest. After you are admitted to UW-Madison, your classification will be EGR (pre-departmental).

  2. Apply to a specific engineering department of interest. Most students apply to a department in the second semester of their freshman year and, if accepted, are "transferred" into that department at the start of their sophomore year.

Follow these steps to apply to an engineering department:

    1. Maintain EGR status for at least one semester.
    2. Explore engineering opportunities at http://www.engr.wisc.edu/introengineering/.
    3. Select a degree-granting department from the list at http://studentservices.engr.wisc.edu/advising/degrees/list.html.
    4. Meet course and grade-point requirements described at http://studentservices.engr.wisc.edu/advising/internal_transfer.html.
